Papillons originated in Spain but were perfected by the French and were favourites at the French court. Henry III, documented his love of the breed by declaring Papillons the official Royal Court dog.
Despite the appearance of the Papillon as a dainty toy breed, many owners will claim that they act like big dogs in small dogs' bodies.
The Papillion is hardy and many owners find their Papillon is capable of a good five-mile walk. They also appear not to be prone to small dog quaking when confronted with new situations. Papillon owners believe that their dogs do their best to be attentive hosts or hostesses.

Another aspect of the Papillon that has led many to believe the 'big dog' assertion is this breed's surprising athletic ability. They are highly energetic and intelligent and built for movement. Most do not need any encouragement to apply their energy to athletic activities!
One story suggests Marie Antoinette walked to the guillotine clutching her Papillon under her arm. According to the story, her pup was spared and cared for in a building in Paris. To this day, that building is still known as Papillon House!!
There is evidence that Papillons were favorites of European aristocrats, especially French royalty. Several Papillons appeared in royal portraits from as early as the 16th century.
The Papillon is said to have taken it's name based on the impressively large, erect ears that resembled the wings of a butterfly. The drop-eared variety of the breed came to be called the Phalène (which means "night moth").
